Efficient coupling of light in and out of the Photonic Integrated Circuit (PIC) is critical for Co-Packaged Optics (CPO) and In-Package Optical I/O applications. Using different types of on-chip couplers, light can be coupled to and from optical fibers horizontally (edge coupler) or vertically (grating coupler). Both approaches are sensitive to fiber positioning and alignment and typically require micro-optics, such as collimating microlenses between the fiber and the on-chip coupler to relax the tolerances. Therefore, the design of such a coupling system requires simulating the propagatio of light at different scales, from the sub-wavelength feature size of the on-chip coupler to the millimeter scale of the micro-optics and fiber attachment.
