Simulation and Additive Manufacturing Speed Tooling Design - Article - ANSYS Advantage - V12 I1

When tooling suppliers told Senior Flexonics engineers that considerable troubleshooting and cost would be required to validate tooling to manufacture finned tubes for a new compact liquid/air heat exchanger, they turned to ANSYS software. Employing ANSYS LS-DYNA to simulate the stamping operation allowed them to design a progressive die prototype right the first time. They were able to produce the tool at a 95 percent lower cost and in 75 percent less time than the best supplier quote.

Ansys LS-Dyna Overview

In November 2019, Ansys acquired LSTC, the authors of the explicit finite element code LS-DYNA. Ansys LS-DYNA is the most used explicit simulation program, capable of simulating the response of materials to short periods of severe loading. Ansys LS-DYNA has a vast array of capabilities to simulate extreme deformation problems using its explicit solver. Engineers can tackle simulations involving material failure and look at how the failure progresses through a part or through a system. Models with large amounts of parts or surfaces interacting with each other are also easily handled, and the interactions and load passing between complex behaviors are modeled accurately.

FSI Using Arbitrary Lagrangian & Eulerian Solvers

The Arbitrary Lagrange Euler (ALE) solver in Ansys LS-DYNA helps you to understand various fluid–structure interaction (FSI) problems like hydroplaning; airbag and fuel tank sloshing for the automotive industry; bird strike; water landing and Mars landing parachutes for the aerospace industry; shape charge; penetration; helmet impact and armor design for defense; underwater explosions; ship–wave interaction for the naval industry; and biomedical industry applications. An Introduction to Ansys LS-DYNA

Ansys LS-DYNA is a general-purpose finite element software solution capable of simulating complex, real-world problems such as impact and crash related problems in automotive industries, as well as blade containment, bird strike, metal forming, fluid splashing, metal cutting, blast and biomechanics in other industries. In a given simulation, any of LS-DYNA's many features can be combined to model a wide variety of physical events. The addition of an add-on tool like Ansys LS-OPT and Ansys LS-TaSC helps in optimization of large nonlinear problems involving dynamic loads and contact conditions. Snowboarding Wrist Protection for Beginners to Elite Athletes

The forearm and wrist account for around 35 to 45 percent of all injuries in snowboarding. Wrist protectors can prevent such injuries by limiting wrist hyperextension and attenuating impact forces. There are many wrist protector concepts, but little consensus as to which designs offer the most protection. While experimental protocols have been developed for characterizing existing wrist protectors, they are limited when it comes to predicting the influence of design changes. Finite element analysis (FEA) can be applied to further our understanding of wrist protector design concepts, without the need to build prototypes. Attend this webinar to learn more about FEA models used for predicting the protective levels of snowboard wrist protectors. A candidate wrist protector has been selected, its parts replicated in a computer-aided design package and its constituent materials identified. Discover the range of FEA models that are being developed in Ansys LS DYNA, from a single splint or foam pad to a complete wrist protector fitted to a surrogate for simulating surface impact. The models will be compared against experimental data to ensure accuracy.

Simulating Metal Forming with Ansys LS-DYNA
