Solving the battery challenge virtually through simulation —instead of building a series of physical prototypes—helped Volkswagen accomplish their goal in the short time frame they were given.

The Pikes Peak International Climb is a rigorous test for the world’s best electric vehicles. Within a year, Volkswagen Motorsport engineers had to design and manufacture a high-performance EV race car. Volkswagen engineers turned to Ansys Fluent to validate and optimize their battery design.

The electrical performance of a battery is dependent on temperature. Developing an accurate thermal model can provide valuable insight prior to testing.  Using Ansys Fluent, the engineers at VW had a streamlined approach to an in-depth problem. Fluent was able to quickly import the massive and complex battery geometry, which gave engineers more time to run high-level multi-physics simulation and optimize the design.  VW went on to set a new overall and EV course record.

Fluent has customizable, task-based workflows for pre-processing to help accelerate the process of generating a high-quality CFD-ready mesh. These workflows are for both clean and dirty CAD.
