A CFD Assessment of Heat Transfer Through a Ship's Hull

Navy ships reject heat generated by equipment, habitability, and combat systems through internal seawater systems. Maintenance and operational costs of these systems are high. The Office of Naval Research (ONR) funded a study to determine the feasibility of rejecting heat through a ships hull. A previous analytical study using classical heat transfer theory determined the initial feasibility of heat transfer through the ships hull, with the exception of the ship at anchor (natural convection). Two sets of ANSYS/FLORTRAN analyses were conducted. The first analysis confirmed the theoretical calculations obtained for a ship underway (1 to 30 knots). The second analysis determined the hull external surface area required to reject a typical ship heat load to seawater for a ship at rest (anchor).
