An Overview of the Foundations of Ansys HFSS and Ansys Maxwell Solver Technologies

Ansys HFSS and Ansys Maxwell are the premier electromagnetic simulation tools used by engineers for over 40 years to design all kinds of electronic products such as antennas, PCBs, connectors, electric motors, transformers, etc.

This webinar covers an overview of the critical foundational technologies for HFSS and Maxwell, plus the recent advanced features. The various numerical methods (finite elements, integral equations, etc.) included in both products will be discussed and positioned with solver options such as direct and iterative algebraic solvers.

HPC options can solve significant problems and dramatically reduce simulation time. We'll also discuss the automatic reduction of the simulation design space for Maxwell to minimize simulation time significantly. We'll highlight Maxwell's advanced physics modeling techniques, such as vector hysteresis, the irreversible effect of temperature on demagnetization, magnetostriction modeling and Litz wire modeling. In addition, an integrated workflow example for multiphysics coupling will be shown, from thermal management to noise, vibration, and harshness.

What you will learn

  • Learn the foundational technologies of HFSS and Maxwell
  • Get an overview of the numerical methods used by HFSS and Maxwell
  • See the key solver options such as direct and iterative algebraic solvers
  • Understand the types of applications that two different Maxwell field formulations can solve

Speakers

Ping Zhou

Ping Zhou is a director of research and development in ANSYS, leading the research and development of low-frequency products.  He has published more than 90 papers in the area of electromagnetic numerical simulation and material modeling, especially for electrical machine applications. Dr. Zhou received his Ph.D. degree from Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada, in 1994 after he was a visiting scholar from 1989 to 1991 in the same university. From 1977 to 1989, he worked in Shanghai University of Technology (current Shanghai University) as a lecture. In 1994, he joined Ansoft Corporation (which was acquired by ANSYS Inc in 2008) and he is the original author of Maxwell products. He is an IEEE life fellow.

Rickard Petersson

Rickard Petersson, R&D Director at Ansys, Inc., is responsible for electromagnetic field solvers including specialized solvers for signal integrity. He has a broad background in electromagnetics with expertise both in computational methods and electromagnetic theory with several publications in these areas. Dr. Petersson has worked as a R&D Engineer at Ansys and Visiting Assistant Professor and Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He received the B.S.E.E. degree from Tennessee Technological University and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical and computer engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology.
