Materials Selection for an Oar Jupyter Notebook

The combination of the Ashby Selection Methodology and property charts from Ansys Granta EduPack is a highly visual way to logically select materials for a design based on requirements. This virtual exercise walks through the process of selecting the material for a rowing oar using the

Ashby Selection Methodology via a Jupyter Notebook interface. Interactive elements for engaging with the exercise, including static property charts, are added using Python script. This resource is specifically targeted at the pre-university level, for those without an Ansys Granta EduPack license. No previous Python experience is required to run this lab.

Learning Outcome

  • Follow the Ashby Selection Methodology through a simple materials selection problem
  • Explain the value visualizing material properties in Ashby charts provides to engineers
  • Describe each step of the Ashby Selection Methodology
  • Have an awareness of how material performance indices are derived

Applicable Courses

  • Pre-university science and engineering courses
  • introductory materials course
  •  intro to engineering courses

Downloadable Content

  • A zip folder with: ReadMe file, Material for Oar Material Selection Jupyter Notebook file, three python script files, and relevant figures
