External aerodynamics studies the motion of airflow over an object moving through air such as a flight vehicle. As an aircraft or missile gains speed, it passes through several flow regimes: subsonic, transonic, supersonic and hypersonic. Each of these regimes entails unique flow physics and unique numerical challenges.
