Prediction and Validation of Mold Fluid Flow and Particle Transport in Continuous Slab Casting with Electromagnetic Braking - Presentation

Continuous casting produces 95 percent of the world’s steel, so even small process improvements can have a wide impact. Most defects arise in the mold region of the casting process due to entrapment of inclusion particles in the solidifying shell and crack formation in the newly solidified steel shell. This session presents an off-line CFD model for multiphase fluid flow with two-way coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian particle tracking to predict trajectory of bubbles/particles in nozzle and mold of the caster. Researchers apply ANSYS Fluent using user-defined functions with the discrete phase model and investigate accuracy.
