Modeling and Simulation of Brushless DC Motor Drive System - Presentation

Brushed DC motors suffer from limitations due to the commutator and brushes. Brushless DC motors provide a superior alternative: however, the tools and design practices do not meet the needs of BLDC motor drive systems. Simple models, representing a brushed DC motor as a second-order linear transfer function and inverter as a gain, are still widely used for the design and development of such systems, even though it is far from the better system that includes a PWM inverter. This presentation compares two approaches of simulating a BLDC motor drive system: a simple average model and a detailed model with PWM inverter. It compares the torque speed curves and presents case studies to extend the detailed model for system optimization with secondary parameters, such as switching frequencies.
