High-Performance Racing Meets High-Performance Computing: How Auto Racing Benefits from Big Compute - Presentation

In the world of auto racing, finding even the smallest competitive advantage can be the difference between winning and losing. That’s why Richard Childress Racing (RCR) designs and builds their race cars end-to-end with the aid of virtual prototypes. RCR’s engineering staff of over 50 world-class engineers — including eight aerodynamicists — meticulously designs, simulates and optimizes the car body airflow for on-track performance using ANSYS Fluent, a commercially-available CFD simulation tool.

This presentation describes how RCR is running half-billion-cell models with ANSYS’ cloud HPC partner Rescale, which provides a turnkey, scalable, state-of-the-art platform for running ANSYS software in the cloud. In addition, it shows how Rescale’s big compute platform has enabled RCR to significantly improve their design process and on-track performance, while driving the future of its high-performance stock car racing development.
