Flexible PCBs/cables are increasingly used in a variety of consumer electronics applications, such as smartwatches and laptops. It is imperative that engineers closely evaluate the performance of these structures under a variety of conditions, including installation, shock and vibration and many others.
The installation process of flexible PCBs has a significant effect on their performance due to the stresses generated during the bending process. Combined with mechanical simulations, machine learning has been demonstrated as an effective way to determine optimal bend profiles. In cases where formed shapes are known, rbfMorph and Ansys Mechanical can be used to rapidly morph flat PCB models into their final configurations.
