Battery Modeling with
Ansys Fluent

Course Overview

This course is designed for users who are interested to learn fundamentals of battery modeling with a focus on electrical, thermal, and electro-thermal coupling. In this course, Ansys Fluent and Ansys Twin Builder tools will be used. It is expected that the user is familiar with Ansys Fluent before taking this course. An introductory lecture on Ansys Twin Builder will be helpful but not required. The course will teach you how to use Ansys Twin Builder for the battery application.

The course consists of several lectures and workshops discussing fundamentals of electro-thermal coupling for battery cells and modules using 3D CFD modeling and System modeling approaches.

In the 3D CFD modeling approach, different methods of applying heat to battery cells (conjugate heat transfer and electro-thermal coupling) and calculating battery temperature field will be discussed along with best practices on how to mesh a battery module.

In the system modeling approach, Reduced Order Model (ROM) and their role in simulating Battery Systems are introduced which includes how ROMS can be generated and used in Twin Builder.

The course finishes with a comparison between 3D CFD simulation and ROM approach for a battery module.

  • Completion of the Introduction to Ansys Fluent course is required.
  • Experience with Ansys Fluent is strongly recommended.
  • Experience with Watertight Geometry Workflow in Ansys Fluent Meshing is recommended.

Target Audience

Ansys Fluent users working in the areas of batteries, battery packs and battery systems.

Teaching Method

Lectures and computer practical sessions to validate acquired knowledge.

Learning Outcome

Following completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Use 3D CFD to study thermal analysis of battery cells and module.
  • Use Reduced Order Model (ROM) in simulating Batteries using system modelling approach.
  • Select the most appropriate modelling approaches for your specific application and simulation objectives.
