Electro Magnetic Applications (EMA)

EMA has been in business for 40 years providing consulting and measurement services to a wide variety of commercial and military customers around the globe. The EMA3D, MHARNESS and EMA3D-Internal tools were developed out of necessity to support consulting projects for customers and are distributed as commercial products worldwide. They have been extensively validated and routinely used as the sole basis for certification of aerospace platforms.

EMA3D is a finite difference time-domain (FDTD) solver that includes advanced models for efficiently modeling thin wires, gaps and seams that are smaller than the computational mesh size. It has been parallelized to run on multi-core architectures and clusters for massive acceleration. It includes a library of transfer impedance data that is necessary for accurate and efficient simulation of realistic platforms such as aircraft, launch vehicles and satellites. Frequency dependent and anisotropic EM parameters are allowed. Also, there are a variety of boundary conditions, sources, and variable mesh sizes available. EMA3D has a sophisticated air conductivity model that considers the plasma fluid nature of air in high electric fields. EMA3D can co-simulate with MHARNESS for a powerful method of determining cable coupling.

MHARNESS models can contain multiple conductors, multiple shields, and multiple branches to capture the actual cable routing of real buildings, vehicles, aircraft, and spacecraft. Each branch segment can contain multiple layers of shields, wires and conductors – all immersed in a variety of respective media. Within MHARNESS are algorithms to analyze electromagnetic coupling through various cable shields to the conductors and wires within. Cable connectors, often possessing different impedance characteristics than the cable itself, are easily defined and employed. A variety of methods are available to terminate each conductor, wire, and shield within a cable harness including circuit termination. Many types of sources are available to drive the cable system including pin voltages, electric fields, current sources, and plane wave sources. MHARNESS can co-simulate within EMA3D for a multi-fidelity simulation of a large platform with fine detail in the harness. MHARNESS includes measured cable properties, such as diameters and transfer impedance. MHARNESS has a detailed GUI that makes it possible to quickly include all the information from a large cable harness into the 3D simulation.

EMA3D-Internal is used for performing a thorough evaluation of spacecraft internal charging risks. Spacecraft charging is a well-known problem for space vehicles. Advanced evaluation of spacecraft charging threats to a particular mission can inform design and drastically reduce the risk for space programs. The user can specify an arbitrary and realistic radiation spectrum, such as what might be obtained using the AP9/AE9 framework. EMA3D-Internal is complementary to Nascap-2K – a trusted and well-known surface charging physics solver.
