ANSYS ICEM CFD™ Mesh Generation

A brief list of our pre-processing/mesh generation modules:

ANSYS ICEM CFD MED

The ICEM CFD Mesh Editor combines the graphical user interface for all the separate geometry, meshing, and editing modules of ICEM CFD into one unified environment for editing geometry, producing and editing meshes, including hybrid grids

ANSYS ICEM CFD Hexa

This grid generation tool is based on a global block topology and provides a top-down approach to grid generation. ICEM CFD Hexa is a semi-automated meshing module and presents rapid generation of multi-block structured or unstructured hexahedral volume meshes. ICEM CFD Hexa represents a new approach to grid generation where the operations most often performed by experts are automated and made available at the touch of a button. Blocks can be interactively adjusted to the underlying CAD geometry. Body fitted internal or external O-Grids can be generated by the system automatically. The grid is projected onto the underlying CAD geometry automatically.

ANSYS ICEM CFD Tetra

ICEM CFD Tetra takes full advantage of the object oriented unstructured meshing technology. No tedious up-front triangular surface meshing is needed to provide well-balanced start meshes. ICEM CFD Tetra works directly from the CAD surfaces and fills the volume with tetrahedral elements using the Octree approach. Prescribed curves and points can define positions of edges and vertices. A powerful smoothing algorithm provides the element quality. The user simply selects the bounding CAD geometry needed. ICEM CFD Tetra generates the volume mesh and the surface mesh on the object surfaces. This automatic mesh generation tool is suitable to complex geometries and offers tools for local adaptive mesh refinement and coarsening.

ANSYS ICEM CFD Prism

Hybrid tetrahedral grids consisting of layers of prism elements near the boundary surfaces and tetrahedral elements in the interior can be generated with ICEM CFD Prism. In comparison to pure tetrahedral grids, hybrid tetrahedral grids with near-surface prism layers allow for a more adequate modeling of the close-to-wall physics of the flow field resulting in smaller analysis models, better convergence of the solution, and better analysis results.

ANSYS ICEM CFD Quad

Quad is a meshing tools for making 2D meshes or 3D surface meshes. It can generate triangle or quad elements and combinations of both. The user simply selects the CAD surfaces for meshing and required element sizes.

ANSYS ICEM CFD BFCart

ANSYS ICEM CFD BFCart is the newest of the ANSYS ICEM CFD meshers. It uses a unique approach to Body fit cartesian mesh to complex geometries in a way that could be pure hex, or allow for some CutCell regions.

ANSYS ICEM CFD Cart3D

Cart3D is a high-fidelity inviscid analysis package for conceptual and preliminary aerodynamic design. It allows users to perform automated CFD analysis on complex geometry. The package includes utilities for geometry import, surface modeling and intersection, mesh generation and flow simulation. Cart3D is an outgrowth of on-going research in Cartesian mesh methods for CFD performed jointly by NASA Ames Research Center and the Courant Institute at NYU.

ANSYS ICEM CFD AutoHexa

This module was a fully automatic hexahedral mesh generator with a simple object-based modeling system utilizing Cartesian geometry: rectangular prisms, cylinders and cones, inclined planes and polygonal prisms.  Users should take a look at ANSYS ICEM CFD Hexa, which includes both Hexa blocking capabilities, Hexa dominant meshing and ANSYS BFCart.  Other users may find that unstructured Tetra Prism or Hybrid meshes are sufficient.

ANSYS ICEM CFD Global

This module was a fully automatic Cartesian mesh generator with H-Grid refinement.  Its functionality, including stair step Cartesian, has been rolled into BFCart which is part of the ANSYS ICEM CFD Hexa product.

ANSYS ICEM CFD Mulcad

Mulcad was a CAD-based computational grid generation tool for multi-block structured and unstructured hexahedral meshes. Although there are some active Mulcad users, the technology has been completely eclipsed by ANSYS ICEM CFD HEXA.

ANSYS ICEM CFD is an excellent mesh generation tool for any area of analysis that requires a computational domain. Initially focused on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) mesh generation, our tools can also be used for Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Electromagnetics (EMAG). The tool comes in several flavors, each tailored to a specific type of customer.

General CFD meshing   ANSYS Solver Only meshing (CFX or Fluent)

General FEA meshing   Workbench general purpose Advanced Meshing

The suite of ICEM CFD mesh generation tools can generate the follow types of elements:

node bar triangle quad
tet hex pent pyr
tetrahedral hexahedral prism pyramid

All of these element types can be either linear or quadratic cells,  with the option of edge-centered nodes.
