Exploring historical designs with Ansys: Understanding Forces in Arches
This free teaching resource for children aged 9+ explores a fascinating question: why do arches stay standing when their individual blocks simply seem to lean on one another? The slide deck introduces forces in general, how they are classified, and how scientists use arrows to show the strength and direction of forces. Students then apply these ideas to understand the forces acting within an arch. Built-in questions and simple classroom activities, such as rubbing hands together to feel friction or building a small arch, encourage active participation and discussion. Simulation images and short videos help make invisible forces visible. This resource is Part 2 of a two-part series on arches. While Part 1 focuses on the historical development of arches and material choices, this part highlights the physical principles that give arches their remarkable stability and longevity.
