Modeling Flow of Water through Soil using Ansys Tools

This guideline provides a step-by-step process for performing a finite element simulation of water flow through soil using Ansys Mechanical™ structural finite element analysis software and Ansys Discovery™ 3D product simulation software. It includes defining materials, creating the geometry, applying boundary conditions, solving the model, and analyzing the results. The example focuses on simulating the flow of water around double rows of sheet piles driven into permeable soil.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the steady-state governing equations for fluid flow in porous media.
  • Gain the ability to simulate 2D and 3D problems using Ansys tools
  • Compare numerical simulation results with hand calculations for validation.

Applicable Courses for Use
