PMSM Control Fundamentals using Ansys Maxwell Software
This case study compares a surface mounted PMSM (SPM) and an interior PMSM (IPM) that share the same stator, windings, materials, and ratings to isolate the effect of rotor saliency on control. The analysis is performed in Ansys Maxwell® advanced electromagnetic field solver. The dq-axis framework is introduced and applied to determine the maximum torque operating point. A current-angle sweep is performed at a fixed current magnitude and nominal speed to locate the maximum torque operating point. Results show the SPM peaking near zero flux axis current, while the salient IPM requires a more negative d-axis current component and therefore a larger current angle.
