Event Overview

Join us Wednesday, May 31st & Thursday, June 1st, for the annual Electric Machine Innovation Conference at the University of Michigan-Dearborn.  This two-day event will feature industry speakers from Ford, General Motors, BorgWarner, American Axle Manufacturing, Nidec, clinic workshops, and a technical poster session. Our clinic workshops will cover topics including:

  • Thermal Management
  • Mechanical and NVH
  • Emag/losses 
  • Optimization/Workflow Couplings

The technical posters session will showcase innovative research and development in the field of electric machine innovation. 

Who should attend:

Any industry engineer working in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, fluid dynamics; engineering directors and managers; and engineering team members who work in electric motor powertrain,  motor electromagnetic design, EE, and ME electric machine design.

Keyu Chen
Keyu Chen

Keyu Chen is a senior NVH engineer at BorgWarner, focused on noise and vibration control of electric machines using simulation. Chen received his Mechanical Engineering Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky in 2020 and is a native of Chongqing, China.

Alireza Fatemi

Alireza Fatemi received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI, USA, in 2016. After completing his degree, he joined General Motors Research and Development, where he works as a Staff Researcher at the Propulsion Systems Research Laboratory. His research interests include optimizing the performance of electromechanical energy conversion systems, designing and controlling power electronics converters, and utilizing computational electromagnetics in machines and drives. Dr. Fatemi is a senior member of IEEE and affiliated with the PES, IAS, IES, and PELS societies and a member of SAE. He has authored or co-authored over 50 technical papers, including three Prize Papers from the IEEE IAS Electric Machines Committee.

Cheng Gong General Motors
Cheng Gong

Cheng Gong received his Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2019. He is now a product engineer developing the next-generation electric motors at General Motors.

Fernando J. Luchini

Fernando is an Electric Motor R&D Engineer at WEG. Luchini coordinates the development of new electric motors lines, focusing on high-efficiency products and customized solutions such as high-density motor and various topologies of electric motors.

Ashfanoor Kabir Turntide Technologies
Ashfanoor Kabir

Dr. Ashfanoor Kabir received his Ph.D. from the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at North Carolina State University. He is an accomplished electrical engineer specializing in electric motor design optimization and experimental validation. From 2017 to 2020, he worked as a research scientist with ABB US Corporate Research Center. He joined Turntide in 2020 as an electric motor design engineer and currently leading their Multiphysics simulation team. He focuses on permanent magnet, reluctance, and axial flux motor designs for automotive and industrial variable speed applications. Driven by a passion for optimization, he has reduced new product development time by 50% through Multiphysics simulation, resulting in cost-competitive and high-performance electric motor solutions. His in-depth knowledge of industry-leading software tools and analytical methods has allowed him to push the boundaries of electric motor design. As a part of Turntide, he is committed to decarbonizing energy-intensive industries and driving sustainable transportation. 

Lathom Louco BorgWarner
Lathom Louco

Lathom Louco is a Senior Power Electronics Design Engineer at BorgWarner, where he develops very high-speed electric machines and power electronics for high-frequency drives, specifically SPM machines operating above 70krpm and wide bandgap power electronics switching >100V/ns. Previously, he was with General Electric (GE), designing power converter electronics and embedded systems. He holds a Master’s ECE Degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a Bachelor’s ECE Degree from the University of Dayton. 

John Morgante AAM
John C. Morgante

John Morgante is the Senior Technical Manager of Advanced Development at American Axle. Before joining American Axle in 2016, Morgante was the Principal Motor Design Engineer for Advanced Development traction motors at General Motors. Morgante has been awarded the 2022 Chairmans Award next generation traction Motor Development at American Axle and the DOE Award Development contract for rare earth-free traction motors. 

Keld Grundfos
Keld Folsach Rasmussen

Keld Folsach Rasmussen has worked for Grundfos for 30 years, starting as an industrial Ph.D. working on Energy Efficient Motors for Pumps. The work includes both development of motors but also simulation tools for motor design.

Keld’s current responsibilities include evaluating new motor types and magnetic materials that can be used for future electrical motors for pump and pump systems. 

Michael Rubbo Nidec
Mike Rubbo

Michael Rubbo is a Senior Principal Engineer with the Motion and Drives group of Nidec Motor Company. With over 30 years of experience leading product development and applied research projects over various motor topologies, production volumes, machine ratings, and applications, Rubbo’s academic work specialized in Electric Machines and Power Systems, and focused his career on the design, development, and commercialization of variable speed, power-dense machines for traction, servo, and distributed power applications. His electric machine-related subject matter expertise includes power frequency electromagnetics, electric power systems, and applied heat transfer, with a special interest in practical, computationally efficient, optimal design approaches for electric machines, including significant use of the Ansys Motor-CAD multi-physics software.

Chandan Sawhney

Chandan Sawhney is the Head of Advanced Engineering at Tata Motors, responsible for electric, hybrid, and fuel cell powertrain solutions. Prior to joining Tata, Sawhney was the head of electrical and electronics for commercial vehicles. With over 29 years of experience, Sawhney has held diverse roles in the consumer and automotive embedded electronics area.

Narges Taran

Narges Taran, Ph.D., is an eMachines Research Engineer at Ford Motor Company, Research and Innovation Center, Dearborn, MI, USA.  Narges received her Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Kentucky, where she received the College of Engineering Dean’s Award.  Before Ford, Narges worked as a Senior Electric Machine Design Engineer at BorgWarner, Noblesville Technical Center.  She has over 35 peer-reviewed journal and conference publications on traction motors, axial flux machines, and topics related to electric machine design and optimization.

Fredrik Grundfos
Frederik Valeur

Frederik Valeur graduated in 2020 from Aalborg and Aarhus University with a MSc in Power Electronics and Drives and a Diploma in Business Administration and Economics. Since 2020, he has been working as a Motor Specialist at the Technology Innovation organization at Grundfos, located in Bjerringbro, Denmark. In this period, he has devoted much of his time to set up Multiphysics design- and optimization workflows to explore both novel- and more established motor topologies, primarily within the Ansys suite. 

Zifu Wang Hitachi Astemo
Zifu Wang

Zifu Wang is an Engineering Director at Hitachi Astemo. Wang leads the motor and drive unit design teams. Before joining Hitachi Astemo, Wang worked at Jing-Jin Electric North America and the University of Michigan. Wang holds a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Lille, France, and is an MBA candidate at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.  

Armen Zakarian UM-D
Armen Zakarian

Armen Zakarian is Vice Provost for Research at the University of Michigan - Dearborn. His research interests include the development of integrated products and systems, system engineering and architecting, and intelligent design and manufacturing. He has published papers in journals and proceedings sponsored by the IIE, ASME, IEEE, SAE and INCOSE societies. His research work is supported through grants from various federal and private sources, including US Army, US Navy, AT&T, FORD Motor Company, General Motors, Visteon, and TRW.
