Overview

Mixing tanks are among the most widely used equipment in drug manufacturing. A typical process, for example, is mixing high-concentration protein drug products with a buffer solution. These two liquids may have different fluid properties (density and rheology), which, if not adequately considered during the design and operation of the mixing process/equipment, may yield a stratified, and hence lost, final batch.

Agitated bioreactors, on the other hand, typically involve a sparged system to maximize the growth/production of beneficial bugs that, in turn, manufacture the desired “product.” For an efficient process, these microorganisms must be continuously fed (with O2 and consumables) and maintained under a specific shear rate threshold.

In this webinar, recent advances in GPU technology will be highlighted through case studies showing a three- to tenfold speed-up in turnaround time. Additionally, streamlining the overall workflow allows for the creation of Design of Experiments (DOE), which opens the door to exploring the entire operation design space. Finally, we will demonstrate how AI/ML-based algorithms can create Reduced Order Models (ROMs) to democratize further mixing simulation for non-CFD experts to consume in real-time/zero-learning curve simulations.
