How Walkie Talkies Work: an Exploration for Children using Ansys HFSS Software
Walkie talkies are a common children’s toy, leading to exploration and adventure in play. But when the walkie talkie doesn’t work across the distances promised on the box, frustration can occur.
This PowerPoint slide deck introduces the concepts of sound and electromagnetic waves to increase understanding walkie talkies really work. Images from Ansys HFSS™ high-frequency electromagnetic simulation software are included to add visualizations, give real data to validate explanations, and introduce engineering simulation at a young age. Questions are scattered throughout the presentation, encouraging students to explore questions they have about the world around them.
This resource is perfect for preK-3 grade classrooms or outreach activities and includes a Facilitator’s guide with suggestions on classroom usage, additional activities, and other supporting information.
