Understanding Steel using the Ansys Granta EduPack Software
Steel is one of the world’s most essential materials with more than 3,500 different grades. Each grade has unique physical, chemical, and environmental properties. With such a wide range of information to cover, engaging students on such a broad yet integral materials science topic can be a challenge. This set of MicroProjects explore both introductory and advanced aspects of steel related to structure, manufacturing, and design. These activities, designed to take 20-30 minutes and scaffolded to increase complexity from start to finish of the exercises, utilize the information and tools within Ansys Granta EduPack™, a teaching software for materials education. Topics such as the Iron-Carbon phase diagram, thermal conductivity of steel vs cast iron, and steel uses in novel applications are explored.
Learning Outcomes
- Understand the effect of processing on steel properties and microstructure
- Extract key information from the Iron-Carbon phase diagram
