Social Dimension of Sustainability Workshop with Ansys Tools: Wind Turbines Case

Use this workshop guide and PowerPoint to introduce students to basic concepts of social sustainability through a product design workflow, using the Ansys Academic Social Impact Audit Tool (SIAT) application for social impact analysis. The workflow can be implemented in a session from 4 hours to several sessions, depending on prior knowledge of participants.

The case study covers a full material selection analysis of wind turbine tower. We use Ansys Granta EduPack™, teaching software for materials education, to perform material selection on multiple criteria: engineering performance, cost and environmental performance over life cycle assumptions. The Social Impact Audit Tool application complements the analysis by exploring different supplying nation scenarios and helps anticipating potential concerns reg social dimensions of sustainability. Question examples and prompts are provided to guide the workflow and generate engaging discussions with students regarding sustainable development in product design.
