Replacing Rosewood in Xylophones with Ansys Granta EduPack Software
Traditions in instrument making favor rare, exotic woods like rosewood for their acoustic properties. However, many of these species now face sustainability challenges, prompting the search for alternatives. While much attention has been given to violins, clarinets, and bows, xylophone bars—often made from rosewood—also warrant investigation.
This student project from Université Libre de Bruxelles explores alternative materials for xylophone bars using Mike Ashby’s materials selection methodology and simplified Life Cycle Analysis (LCA). The study showcases performance index derivation, materials selection using Ansys Granta EduPackTM teaching software for materials education, and a simplified Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) using the Ansys Granta EduPack Eco Audit Tool to evaluate sustainability, and identify viable substitutes. It demonstrates how engineering students can address real-world environmental concerns through informed materials choices.
