Level 3 Industrial Case Study: Materials for Nuclear Reactors

Nuclear power remains a real and relevant option for many countries to supply energy without fossil greenhouse gas emissions. Due to the temperature and radiation characteristics of nuclear processes, there are specific requirements on the performance of the materials involved in the power generation. The materials used in nuclear reactors are essential both for efficiency and operational safety of the plants. In this case study, developed in collaboration with the Polytechnic School of the University of São Paulo in Brazil, materials for the cladding of Pressurized Water Reactors and Pebble Bed Reactors are selected, using both the Elements data table and the Sustainability database.
