Composite Part Optimization using ANSYS DesignXplorer and MultiMechanics

MultiMechanics and ANSYS are excited to announce the new MultiMech plug-in for ANSYS Mechanical, which is fully compatible with ANSYS DesignXplorer. Using this tool, engineers are now able to optimize components at both the part level AND the microstructural levels. Material variables in MultiMech can be defined as a DesignXplorer parameter for design studies. These controlled parameters include constituent material strength and stiffness, volume fraction and inclusion type.

This webinar also demonstrates how an engineer or scientist would use MultiMech to optimize a part comprised of multiple types of advanced materials.

ANSYS 2019 R3: Introducing Motion

ANSYS Motion is a third-generation engineering solution based on an advanced multibody dynamics solver. It enables fast and accurate analysis of rigid and flexible bodies and gives accurate evaluation of physical events through the analysis of the mechanical system as a whole.

ANSYS Motion uses four tightly integrated solving schemes: rigid body, flexible body, modal and meshfree EasyFlex. This gives you unparalleled capabilities to analyze systems and mechanisms in any combination you want. Large assemblies with many millions of degrees of freedom can be studied with the effects of flexibility and contact included. Standard connections and joints then allow these systems to be connected and loaded.

In addition to the basic package, ANSYS Motion offers additional toolkits so users working in areas with specific multibody dynamic needs can work faster and more efficiently.

How to Predict Thermal Cycle Failures of Electronics

Temperature cycling is the biggest challenge for ensuring reliability in electronics. This is because the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) can differ widely between the various materials that make up an electronics assembly. The CTE mismatch between materials causes mechanical stresses during heating and cooling.

This webinar discusses component level reliability, board level reliability and system level interactions that affect reliability. The methodology used in ANSYS Sherlock for calculating solder joint fatigue and plated through-hole fatigue due to temperature cycling will be presented, along with examples and case studies of solder fatigue predictions.

ANSYS 2019 R3: Additive Manufacturing Update

The latest release of ANSYS additive manufacturing (AM) software includes these new features, among others:

  • ANSYS Additive Prep has a new build processor which allows you to export a build file directly to an AM machine.
  • ANSYS Workbench Additive enables you to switch easily between viewing the STL supports, mesh or element densities. It also features an option to remove STL supports after cooldown on the AM process sequencer.

ANSYS Additive Print also has multiple new features with regards to supports:

  • Support-only cutoff enables you to cut the support from the part but leaves the part attached to the baseplate under the displacement after cutoff output option.
  • The Support Groups feature enables multiple supports in a single simulation, including a mix of volume-less and solid support types.

Join us to learn about these new AM capabilities from ANSYS.

Introduction to Reliability Physics Analysis

Ensuring the reliability of an electronic design is becoming more and more critical as electronics become increasingly widespread and complex. Studies have found that design can account for up to 70% of a product’s total cost. So why do organizations continue to rely on the antiquated and expensive “design-build-test-fix” approach? Reliability physics analysis (RPA) gives organizations a better, more scientific way of testing for reliability to improve time to market, lower design costs and build more reliable and robust products.

Key Takeaways:

  • The state of reliability testing and why “design-build-test-fix” no longer works
  • Introduction to reliability physics analysis and how it is derived from the physics of failure (PoF)
  • How reliability physics analysis enhances simulation and modeling
  • Where reliability physics fits into an organization’s design process
  • Who is responsible for reliability physics analysis

Moving Digital Manufacturing to the Cloud

FLSmidth Is on Its Way to a Hybrid CAE Cloud Infrastructure

Digital transformation is accelerating in all industries. Corporations are looking to increase agility and innovation by streamlining their processes and shifting company assets into services that can also be outsourced. One example is FLSmidth, a manufacturer based in Denmark — with 12,000 employees and offices in 60 countries. It provides market-leading factories, machinery, services and know-how to the global cement and mineral industries.

FLSmidth's R&D team is currently enhancing their in-house engineering computing resources. They are adding on-demand compute clusters in the Microsoft® Azure® cloud and moving their customized CAE workloads, including ANSYS Fluent and ANSYS Mechanical, onto this fully automated and self-service cloud platform. This result will be a hybrid, dynamic and fully automated self-service engineering simulation environment, enabled by UberCloud’s unique high-performance computing (HPC) software containers.

In this webinar, we explain current and future simulation infrastructure at FLSmidth, list the reasons for this sea change and describe the transformation process, benefits and challenges encountered along the way. Learn how UberCloud's CAE software container technology dramatically facilitated the smooth transition of its CAE workloads to a hybrid, multicloud engineering simulation infrastructure.

Nonlinear Adaptivity Technology in ANSYS Mechanical

Computational models of elastomeric seals, packers and metal manufacturing processes are highly nonlinear with evolving contacts, large strains and severe geometric distortion. The Lagrangian finite element mesh typically used is susceptible to errors due to severe mesh distortion. The Nonlinear Adapativity (NLAD) capability in the ANSYS Mechanical solver is a powerful technique to overcome the distortion issues and successfully solve such models. The solver tracks the mesh distortion during solution, automatically regenerates a new, superior quality mesh when needed, maps the solution variables and continues to solve until completion.
