Energy Efficient, IoT-Based Smart Home - White Paper

"Smart Home" technology is the future of residential technology, designed to deliver and distribute a number of services inside and outside the house via networked devices in which all the different applications and the intelligence behind them are integrated and interconnected. These smart devices have the potential to share information with each other as long as they can access a broadband internet connection. Hence, "Smart Home" technology has become part of the IoT (Internet of Things). In this work, we analyze a home model to demonstrate an energy-efficient IoT-based smart home. We perform multiphysics simulations focusing on the kitchen of the home model, and use a motion sensor with a surveillance camera as part of the home security system. Coupled with the home light and HVAC control systems, the smart system can remotely control the lighting and heating or cooling when an occupant enters or leaves the kitchen.

Cavitation: A Critical CFD App You Have to Get Right - Application Brief

Cavitation is the formation of vapor bubbles within a liquid when flow dynamics cause the local static pressure to drop below the vapor pressure. The bubbles usually last a short time, collapsing when they encounter higher pressure. Cavitation can cause noise and vibration, structural wear and damage, leading to reduced performance. It is a common problem in pumps (especially centrifugal or positive displacement pumps), compressors, hydraulic turbines, propellers, fuel injectors and other fluid devices subjected to high variations in pressure.

Engineering Simulation: A Promising Tool for Securing Regulatory Approvals - White Paper

Computational modeling and simulation (CM&S) is now widely used as a part of healthcare product and process development activities. By simulating the performance of healthcare devices and therapies in a low-risk, cost-effective virtual environment, the development process can be accomplished much faster and more cost-effectively. To date, CM&S technology has been largely ignored during the equally important and very costly regulatory approval process. Yet its acceptance for securing regulatory approvals is increasing, as more government agencies and other stakeholders are seeing its benefits. The United States Congress, the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Parliament have all publicly recognized the value engineering simulation can add during the process of demonstrating product performance and gaining approvals. Today a number of healthcare companies and technology providers are joining forces within the Avicenna Alliance to accelerate the pace of adoption. With so many doors open, the failure to use engineering simulation as part of the regulatory approval process not only misses a major opportunity, but also wastes precious resources.
