Certification by Analysis: Transforming Aircraft Component Compliance Through Digital Engineering
Aircraft certification is a critical yet costly part of aviation development, requiring strict adherence to safety standards set by global authorities like the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). Traditionally, compliance involved extensive physical testing of every system — structures, engines, control systems, and more. However, these tests are time-consuming, expensive, and sometimes hazardous. As aircraft become more complex and new technologies emerge, the traditional certification process is increasingly seen as unsustainable, especially for smaller companies.
Certification by analysis (CbA) offers an alternative by using digital modeling and simulation to validate compliance. This approach enables aerospace companies to reduce their reliance on physical tests while ensuring safety and performance. By integrating simulations early in the design phase, companies can catch potential failures sooner, significantly reduce development costs, and accelerate time to market. Ansys’ simulation tools support this method through rigorous verification, validation, and uncertainty quantification.
