Paving the way to on-track successes

Since 2008, as part of an Innovation Partnership with Ansys, Oracle Red Bull Racing has been using Ansys simulation technology across a range of critical application areas.

The focus of the partnership has grown from an initial focus on aerodynamics simulation to solving cooling problems, managing and optimizing materials usage and IP, and ensuring the vehicle is designed to protect the driver in the event of a crash.

Ansys is proud to be an innovation partner to Oracle Red Bull Racing and continue to drive engineering productivity and slash design cycle time by helping engineers create enhanced car designs faster.

Supporting the successes

Digital simulation is key to Oracle Red Bull Racing's rapid design process including computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software and materials data management tools, enabling the team to optimize Formula One car designs faster in a virtual environment.

With the evolution of CFD, the “virtual wind tunnel”, the Oracle Red Bull Racing team have been able to iterate designs faster, before manufacturing models for test in physical wind tunnels. The Aerodynamics Team uses Ansys Fluent as a key part of their design and decision-making processes, underpinning aerodynamic development processes using CFD.

Ansys Fluent provides more time to innovate and optimize product performance. Increased reliability of simulation results with a software that has been extensively validated across a wide range of applications.

Ansys Fluent contains the best-in-class physics models and can accurately and efficiently solve large, complex models.

The Oracle Red Bull Racing team uses Ansys Fluent to develop the cooling circuit and cooling capability of the car. The simulations help the team to optimize and evolve the design of cooling components, such as sizing, shape and volume, with their radiator partner, PWR, and maximize the Power Unit’s (PU) performance.

Ansys Fluent unlocks new potentials for CFD analysis. A fluid simulation software with fast pre-processing and faster solve times enabling reduced speed to market, limitless innovation, while never compromising on accuracy.

Ensuring all members of the engineering team are using the same materials data is important to ensuring consistency of design and quality of manufacturing. With frequent updates and new innovative materials ensuring the team has access to the most up-to-date materials information is vital. Granta MI is used throughout the team in the design and development phase, manufacturing and testing.

Ansys Granta MI offers enterprise-wide materials data management software to store, control and analyze, creating a materials “gold-source”. Workflow tools ensure the smooth capture, processing and approval of data, information and expertise, enabling digital transformation.

Granta MI enables engineers to save time, drive innovation, cut costs and eliminate risk.

Simulation tools like Ansys LS-DYNA enables engineers to test impacts using virtual models and collect even more data than is available from physical crash testing. In conjunction with other tools to help define crash structures on the Oracle Red Bull Racing Formula 1 car by enabling the team to model, simulate and correlate impacts with real-world testing.

Ansys LS-DYNA is the most used explicit simulation program in the world and is capable of simulating the response of materials to short period of severe loading.

LS-DYNA delivers a diverse array of analyses with extremely fast and efficient parallelization.
