With emerging threats, budding technologies, and rising challenges, leaders in the aerospace and defense (A&D) industry are being asked to embrace digital transformation now more than ever to meet unprecedented demands.
From original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to the federal government, A&D engineers and product developers are implementing simulation into workflows to accelerate innovation, increase sustainability efforts, and mitigate risks.
Ansys’ multiphysics simulation supports this digital adoption by providing civilian and military members of the A&D industry with a multidisciplinary approach to engineering and product design through user-friendly solutions that deliver speed, agility, and predictive accuracy across key areas.
Ansys will join top aviation leaders and innovators from around the world to showcase these benefits and more at the Farnborough International Airshow from July 18-22 at Farnborough Airport in Hampshire, England.

Alongside nearly 1,500 exhibitors, Ansys will demonstrate how its comprehensive simulation portfolio propels the A&D industry forward in both fundamental and emerging areas of engineering.
Ansys’ simulation experts will be on-site to illustrate the advantages of simulation in A&D through five pillars:
With multiphysics simulation software equipped for fluids, electronics, digital mission engineering, and more, A&D companies throughout the world are integrating Ansys’ simulation solutions to engineer smarter, faster, and cleaner technologies and systems; from energy-efficient hydrogen propulsion systems to hypersonic defense technology and electromagnetic spectrum resilience.
For example, by incorporating finite element analysis (FEA) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with software such as Ansys Mechanical or Ansys Fluent, respectively, engineers can assess thermal, structural, vibrational, and aerodynamic components from the front- to rear-end of each aircraft vehicle. As another tool, software designed for high-frequency simulation such as Ansys HFSS, enables engineers to monitor electromagnetic interference (EMI), electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), radio frequency interference, signal, and power integrity.
Simulation is also helping A&D engineers prepare for the future of passenger travel, which could soon resemble a scene from The Jetsons. Next-generation aviation is expected to include automated electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft in regular operation at lower altitudes in urban and rural environments. To get ready for this transition, A&D engineering teams are using virtual modeling and digital visualization to plan and predict aircraft performance and new air traffic conditions.

Similarly, simulation helps A&D engineers prepare for space exploration. With increased risk due to heightened commercial activity of reusable launch vehicles and small satellites operating in Earth’s orbit, simulation helps engineers plan orbits and predict conjunctions that maximize a satellite’s lifespan while keeping it safe.
Still, none of these tools would be as effective without a skilled team. As experts retire and fewer qualified, trained graduates enter the field, the A&D industry faces challenges in the workforce.
Ansys recognizes this plight and provides tools to develop, guide, and support engineering teams with resources through the Ansys Training Center, which includes access to the Ansys Learning Hub, courses, and more.
Safety and sustainability impact all the other pillars in some way, and structural aircraft safety is not the only matter of safety to consider. Cybersecurity is equally important and simulation supports this effort through reliable embedded control software, including Ansys medini analyze for Cybersecurity and Ansys SCADE Suite, that ensures secure aircraft systems and decreases the risk of cyberattacks.
Added to evolving safety concerns, sustainability remains a hot topic as apprehension rises over global warming conditions and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. For this reason, Ansys will share A&D industry examples of how simulation integration has improved efficiency and aided the environment by reducing material usage through virtual prototyping, accelerating development times, and providing the tools to create more efficient systems.
Materials selection is another critical component to sustainability. Access to a comprehensive materials database becomes increasingly advantageous as regulatory agencies require companies to validate that their materials adhere to environmental standards and do not contain restricted substances. With software like Ansys GRANTA Selector, for example, engineers can select smarter materials, compare materials for compliancy requirements, and eliminate unsuitable candidates.
To register for the show, visit the Farnborough International Airshow event site. If you plan to attend, stop by Ansys’ indoor or outdoor sites located at booth #4960 and chalet #C224, respectively, or learn more about Ansys’ A&D pillars and schedule a meeting in advance here.
