Application Analysis of Ansys LS-DYNA Implicit Solver in Automotive Seats

“With LS-DYNA’s implicit solver, we can perform both explicit and implicit analysis within a single software environment. This saves module costs, eliminates the need for independent tools, accelerates explicit-to-implicit model conversion, reduces training requirements, and ensures reliable accuracy for large deformation, nonlinear, and convergent analysis.”

The rapid development of the automotive industry has significantly shortened product upgrade cycles. Both traditional automakers and emerging new-energy vehicle manufacturers face tremendous competitive pressure and must reduce costs and lower product prices to capture market share. This pressure is also directly passed on to Tier-1 and Tier-2 suppliers. As a major automotive supplier in China, Yanfeng International has begun reassessing its internal costs, seeking new efficiencies, and considering multi-disciplinary applications of simulation software. Yanfeng International explored using the implicit solver of Ansys LS-DYNA nonlinear dynamics structural simulation software for structural strength analysis.

Challenges

Yanfeng International uses Ansys LS-DYNA extensively for explicit dynamic simulations. However, for certain implicit scenarios — such as structural strength or modal analysis — the company would need to purchase additional mainstream computer-aided engineering (CAE) tools. This introduces the need to learn new software and potentially rebuild models to adapt to a different simulation platform. Such processes significantly reduce development efficiency and require considerable additional financial and human resources..

Engineering Solutions

  • LS-DYNA software’s implicit dynamics enables users to perform implicit analysis with only minor modifications to existing explicit models. The implicit solver supports large deformation, nonlinear behavior, and offers optimal convergence. It also eliminates the inertial effects inherent in explicit static analysis.
  • In recent years, LS-DYNA software has been continuously upgraded and its implicit functionalities refined. Yanfeng International introduced the implicit solver for strength analysis and developed a unified model applicable to both explicit and implicit simulations. The results generated using LS-DYNA software were benchmarked against test conditions and successfully met project requirements. This approach significantly improved work efficiency, reduced overall costs, and enabled easier model iteration using a unified modeling framework.

Benefits

In March 2024, the company successfully validated the concept of “One Software, Multiple Applications” using Ansys LS-DYNA software’s implicit solver. Since most simulation tools on the market focus on different domains, companies typically need to invest in multiple platforms to support business operations. Through the implicit capabilities of LS-DYNA software, Yanfeng International can now perform both explicit and implicit simulations using a single tool and even a single model — with only simple adjustments required. This greatly improves software utilization and enhances R&D efficiency.
