Finite element analysts pore over every detail of the model geometry, element selection, mesh quality, boundary conditions, and loads. When defining material properties, is it reasonable to accept default values in the FEA tool or grab a few numbers from a data sheet or handbook? As with many engineering topics, the answer, it depends. Critical factors include loading conditions (e.g., amplitude, rate, frequency, range), environmental conditions (e.g., temperature, moisture, UV exposure), and even the questions you are trying to answer with the FEA.
Whether you know it or not, your FEA model uses a material model. The material model describes how the material behaves as a function of displacement, strain rate, loading direction, temperature, and/or other factors. The simplest models assume constant or linear behaviors, which are often helpful. However, many real-world applications and materials require more complex material models to ensure accurate simulation results.
