Early-stage Design: Better Materials, Better Products

Around 80% of a product’s costs are determined by decisions made upfront in the development cycle. We can choose an optimal material and design by considering both material selection and simulation early. In this webinar, we will guide you through how to pick the most effective material.

Overview

The consequences of a poor-quality product have never been higher. There is a constant drive towards better, cheaper, and more durable products in all industries. However, let’s look at the product development process. Almost 80% of the product’s total costs are locked in by decisions made early in the design cycle – the initial design of the product and the choice of materials. By selecting the right materials at the start, we save ourselves from costly re-designs later in the product life, have confidence that we are building the best quality product, and provide our engineers with simulation-ready materials data to validate the combination of material and design as early as possible.

In this webinar, we’ll explore systematically selecting materials at the conceptual design stage before most cost and development effort is locked in. We will use an example of specialist fittings and fixtures in a demanding environment where we are looking to save on both material cost and manufacturing/machining effort. We can consider multiple competing factors and quickly identify red flags that may cause problems later in the design cycle.

We will also briefly explore the wide range of materials reference data provided by Ansys that you can use in these material selections and show you how to easily supply your Ansys and third-party simulation applications with key materials property data and models.

What you will learn

  • Learn how to select the optimal material for challenging applications
  • Understand how to balance different performance requirements and rapidly eliminate unsuitable materials
  • Compare candidate materials and flag items for further investigation
  • Tour the Granta materials data library – material properties including mechanical, thermal, processing, electromagnetic, sustainability and more
