Thermal Performance of Inverter Bus Bars with Complex Harmonic Content

Bus bars are widely used in inverters for the electrification of drivetrains in automotive and industrial applications. If a bus bar’s operating temperature is above rated temperature, the bus bar’s life may be reduced. Additionally, insulation and current sensor failure may occur due to overheating. The trend of higher switching devices and higher power density may bring even more challenges to bus bar thermal design.

This webinar spotlights Ansys 2021 R1’s new capabilities for coupling accurate loss density calculations to thermal solvers for predicting temperature in bus bars. This workflow leverages Ansys Maxwell’s new A-Phi transient analysis to obtain accurate ohmic loss distribution and then uses mapped loss to Ansys Icepak for thermal analysis. With AC proximity and skin-depth losses included, the A-Phi transient solver provides the most accurate power loss calculation for general busbar excitations.

  • Learn how Ansys Maxwell’s magnetic transient A-Phi solver simulates general waveforms on bus bars
  • Explore best practices with magnetic transient A-Phi formulation
  • Receive simple thermal suggestions for simulations from electrical engineers
  • Understand how to couple Maxwell and Icepak for multiphysics simulation within a single Ansys Electronics Desktop interface
