Second Online Materials Education Symposium

Lessons learned and re-booting materials education

The Online Materials Education Symposium is a free event designed to inspire and create discussion around online materials-related undergraduate teaching and to share best practices. This symposium is our second online event and is part of the Materials Education Symposia series. The interdisciplinary nature of materials teaching is a major focus of the symposia, exploring how materials can link different subjects together, especially with simulation-based design, and learning from experiences of teaching materials and processes across the curriculum.

In this online symposium, the presenters will focus on how materials, engineering, and design teaching has changed during and after the Coronavirus pandemic. Or in a nutshell, what have we learned about online delivery, and what will we retain? Four outstanding engineering educators from four institutions in UK, USA, and Canada will share their experiences in four presentations and then join in a discussion panel and answer your questions.

Symposium Agenda:

  • Welcome and Introductions
  • The Pitfalls and Triumphs of Holding Practical Workshops Online by Mark Miodownik, University College London, UK
  • A Case for Case Studies: Using Open-Ended and Unfolding Case Studies in Materials Education by John Nychka, University of Alberta, Canada
  • Reinforcing course content with integrated computing and experiments by Graham McShane, University of Cambridge, UK
  • Machine learning and AI in materials education by Elizabeth Holm, Carnegie Mellon University, USA
  • Panel discussion and Q&A, moderated by Hugh Shercliff, University of Cambridge, UK

What you will learn

  • Best practices in online materials, engineering and simulation-based design teaching, as shared by renowned engineering educators
