Effect of Side Spin on a Soccer Ball using Ansys Fluent

Magnus effect or the curving of the ball is seen during freekick of a football (soccer ball). This case study will explain how Bernoulli’s principle is used to explain the effect and how Ansys Fluent can be utilised to visualize this effect on a translating ball that is spinning about an axis normal to the movement of the ball (side spin). This case study will also explain how Bernoulli’s principle is derived using the Navier-Stokes equation and how the boundary layer plays an important role in this effect.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand how Bernoulli's principle can be used to explain Magnus effect.
  • Ability to use Fluent to set up spinning and translating boundary conditions of a football
  • Ability to visualize and evaluate the results
