Overset Mesh Can Simplify and Speed Simulations with Moving Parts

A common difficulty in simulating complex fluid flows is that some geometries cannot be well-represented using a single, contiguous mesh. In many cases, distinct geometrical features are best represented by different mesh types. Preparing the finished mesh can thus be time-consuming and complicated. And, the large, poorly structured meshes that emerge can take excessive time to solve and result in reduced accuracy.

ANSYS Fluent supports overset mesh (also known as “chimera” or “overlapping” mesh), to optimize simulations that include:

  • Structured mesh around individual parts
  • Part swapping
  • Moving cell zones (oveset mesh eliminates remeshing or smoothing)
  • Design exploration studies

Overset mesh can be especially useful in cases involving large relative motion between components. Compared to remeshing, overset mesh allows greater control of local mesh characteristics as the geometry moves through the domain, because individual mesh zones need not deform to accommodate moving geometry. When used in appropriate cases, overset mesh can allow optimization of local cell types and quality, reduce cell count (and, therefore, computation time), or simplify model setup. The overset mesh technology, along with other powerful, mesh-smoothing and remeshing capabilities available in ANSYS Fluent, complete the toolset for simulating fluid motion with complex moving geometry.
