ANSYS Fluent Gradient-Based Optimization
Shape optimization can be performed with ANSYS Fluent using gradient-based optimization methods enabled by the adjoint solver. The adjoint solver in ANSYS Fluent is a smart shape optimization tool that uses CFD simulation results to find optimal solutions based on stated goals (reduced drag, maximized lift-over-drag ratio, reduced pressure drop, etc.) and then computes specifically how to modify the design to obtain the optimal state. This course will introduce students to the capabilities of the adjoint solver, design tool and gradient-based optimizer and enable students to use them on their own to perform shape optimization, solving problems such as minimizing pressure drop or improving flow uniformity, and first steps towards topology optimization.The gradient-based optimization course has several tutorials. Some will be completed during the course and some can be worked on after the lectures.
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
Define observables to be optimized
Set up and execute an adjoint solver calculation
Analyze adjoint solver results
Use the design tool and design conditions to control and constrain mesh deformation to improve the observable
Automate shape optimization with the use of the gradient-based optimizer
A technical education and background is recommended but an engineering degree is not required.
Completion of the Introduction to ANSYS Fluent course is required.
Completion of the ANSYS Fluent Heat Transfer and ANSYS Fluent Turbulence training courses is recommended.
Experience with ANSYS Fluent is strongly recommended.
