Nonlinear Analysis for the Three-Dimensional Temperature Fields of the Ventilated Embankment in Qing-Tibet Railway

Some segments of Qing-Tibet railway have been using the ventilated embankment to ensure the thermal stability for its crossing through 632km cold region. Using ANSYS transient thermal analysis, the threedimensional model was build for the temperature characteristic of the ventilated embankment has been performed under the case that the annual mean air temperature in Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau will be warmed up by 2.6° in the future 50 years and the yearly-average air temperature is about -4.3° or the yearly-average temperature at the native surface is about –1°. The result of the traditional embankment and the ventilated embankment are analyzed and compared. It indicates that the ventilated embankment is able to play a cooling role to the permafrost under it and to reduce the embankment base temperature, which ensures the stability of embankment in permafrost regions. At the same time it also provides guarantee for the safe running of Tibetan railway.
