Concrete Block Recovery in Harbor Works: Lighter Clamp Design
Traditionally, methods of recovering concrete blocks result in very stout equipment, caring much more about the working reliability than for the weight and material cost. Concerns about security and cost reductions, together with new technologies, require new lightweight designs. In this paper, we explain the procedure followed, using the Finite Elements Method, to design clamps which have reduced the weight up to a fifth of the usual clamp weight, resulting not only in clamp cost reduction but also in lower crane costs and has more efficient and faster handling of the blocks. These practical results have been proved during the work that has been done during last year at Gijón’s harbor (Asturias – Spain).
