Current APFSDS-T (Armor-Piercing, Fin-Stabilized, Discarding Sabot, with Tracer) tank ammunition utilizes annular grooves to transfer shear from the supporting structures to the depleted uranium penetrator while accelerating through the cannon. This paper examines a groove geometry change that is reported to reduce bending stresses in the penetrator by 25%, thus possibly reducing potential failures induced by these stress risers when lateral loads are introduced via complex armor systems.
