Unmanned aerial vehicles, or UAVs, have been used by militaries around the globe for a number of years and are now a key technology for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance operations and their role is expanding. In more recent times, interest in lighter than air vehicles and commercial and hobbyist drones has grown significantly with applications ranging from cargo and parcel delivery, internet provision in remote areas, emergency aid, industrial asset monitoring such as pipelines and many more. Drones are a microcosm of technology referred to as the Internet of Things (IoT) and for business and technology leaders to realize the potential for drones in their organization there are a number of common IoT related product engineering challenges to overcome.
