VSP at GM for Battery Pack Design

Since their commercial introduction in the early 1990s, lithium-ion batteries have emerged as the most popular form of rechargeable energy storage devices in the portable electronics and electrical vehicle markets. For electrical vehicle makers, designing an efficient and robust cooling system for the battery pack is a key engineering task.

As part of a program administered by the DOE’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory, a team comprised of researchers, engineers and software developers from General Motors, ANSYS and ESim LLC used a systems-level approach featuring ANSYS Simplorer to develop an electricity battery design tool that successfully analyzes potential cooling system designs.
