Designing Safe Flare Systems

In the gas industry, badly designed isomerization units can suffer from flare puffing and knocking, sloshing and dislodging of internals — dangerous conditions that can lead to fire or explosions. Engineers used ANSYS CFD to simulate boiling water, model free surface flow of gas/liquid interfaces and to connect easily to 1-D tools for bubble size calculations. Thier results enabled them to modify the inlet design and eliminate the flare seal knocking sound and damage to the internals, ensuring that the flare operates reliably.
