Accurate modeling of flame extinction and blow-out effects in aircraft propulsion and power generation systems involves strong interactions of flow turbulence with flame dynamics. ANSYS Fluent was used in a large-eddy simulation of a series of piloted, partially premixed flames. This study succeeded in capturing flame temperature suppression due to local flame extinction, and in predicting the global blow-out limit.

Design Methods

Sail design is a complex aerodynamic problem. Apart from the capability to accurately predict sail performance, the numerical design tool must adjust to sailing conditions related to hull performance. A sail shape optimization procedure coupling ANSYS Fluent for aerodynamic analysis to an analytical velocity prediction program led to the successful design of an A-class catamaran sail.

The temperature rise of electrical contacts is an essential question during electric switchgear design; excessive temperatures can melt contacts. How electromagnetic effects of time-varying loads influenced the current distribution among contact points in circular contact elements was unknown. Simulations involving ANSYS Workbench combined with ANSYS Mechanical APDL helped to clarify this question by providing input data for steady-state temperature rise calculations.

Conversion of heavy hydrocarbons to lighter ones in fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) reactors relies on the mixing and evaporation of injected gas oil droplets and their collisions with catalytic particles. To investigate droplet–catalyst collisions inside FCC reactors, CUL and CERTH used ANSYS DesignModeler and ANSYS Fluent. Simulations showed that collisions between droplets and hot catalysts of equal size improve conversion.

Induction melting of metals under levitation conditions prevents contamination and reduces heat losses. However, leakage limits the metal charge to 100 g — too low for industrial needs. Using ANSYS Mechanical and ANSYS Fluent, researchers analyzed interactions between the EM field and the turbulent free surface flow of liquid metal, enabling them to melt 500 g of aluminum.

National Taiwan University of Science and Technology

Evaluating different surgical treatments for cervical degenerative disc disease is quite difficult because of high variations in bone geometry and quality among patients. Researchers used ANSYS Workbench to model the human upper body with 160 bones and soft tissues and 30 muscles and ligaments. The model succeeded in identifying the extent of cervical degenerative disc disease before and after treatment.

Using ANSYS ICEM CFD and ANSYS CFX researchers simulated, airflow, temperature, humidity and particle transport. This provided a qualitative and quantitative assessment of surgery.

Bearings are a crucial part of high-speed turbogenerators. Poorly optimized cooling systems may result in premature failure. Bowman Power was able to test many different conditions using the parametric capabilities within ANSYS Workbench and ANSYS Mechanical APDL. Engineering productivity has been increased drastically, equipment costs reduced and the baseline design can quickly and easily be adjusted to meet customer needs.

Researchers used ANSYS HFSS to help design a flexible EPR (electron paramagnetic resonance) resonator for EPR tooth dosimetry, a technique that can measure the radiation dose a person received by examining tooth enamel in vivo. They were able to virtually prototype and test operational parameters without creating a real prototype; simulation prevented several design mistakes along the way.

Progressive cavity pumps (PCPs) are widely used in the oil and gas industries for handling crude oil, emulsions, produced water and multiphase fluids. ANSYS Fluent was used to study geometric parameters and the effects of fluid properties on pump performance.

Understanding wind-induced vibrations is critical when designing flexible long span bridges. Researchers used ANSYS Fluent and ANSYS Mechanical to perform fluid–structure simulations for a 145-meter-long suspension bridge and eliminated the need for less-accurate and more-expensive wind tunnel tests. This method was more efficient than traditional numerical methods for flow-induced vibration problems, which are mainly based on quasi-steady fluid dynamics.

Cyclonic separation is a method of removing particulates from air, gas or liquid using centrifugal force and gravity instead of filters. Researchers used ANSYS Fluent to determine how best to remove moisture from compressed air using cyclonic separation. Simulations predicting the flow patterns, pressure drop and efficiency of the cyclonic separator are in good agreement with test data.

Chip-package board workflow helps create cutting-edge systems-on-chip for wireless communications and connectivity, HDTV, DVD and Blu-ray. Using ANSYS HFSS and ANSYS SIwave co-simulation, MediaTek accurately predicted the effect of electronic package configurations on the high-speed DDR3 channel and delivered a solution that achieved larger timing and voltage margins, and less jitter, overshoot and undershoot. Simulation assisted the company roll out a new product with confidence.


While designing the cooling system for a multipurpose rotary engine, engineers found hot spots and cavitations in vortex flows throughout the water jackets, resulting in reduced cooling efficiency. ANSYS Fluent and ANSYS CFD-Post enabled them to monitor hot spots, flow distribution, temperature contours and cavitations in the fluid domain directly, leading to the development of a high-performance coolant system.

Unexpected fractures of Nitinol stent frames in transcatheter aortic valve replacements are a major problem, but evaluating the stents in vivo is difficult. Fluid‐structure interaction (FSI) modeling using ANSYS LS-DYNA enabled researchers to use two-way multiphysics simulation to evaluate implanted stents on a patient‐specific basis, including areas of abnormal hemodynamics, vortices, leakages, and stresses and strains in the valve.

Spreader bars are used with cranes for heavy lifting and because several bars may be required for some applications: reducing weight while maintaining strength is paramount, particularly when used in the ocean. Employing the parametric capabilities within ANSYS Workbench and ANSYS Structural simulation for deformation and stress, engineers provided weight savings of approximately 60 percent for a deepwater spreader bar.

Fin and tube compact heat exchangers (FTCHEs) are commonly used in air conditioning systems, automotive cooling systems and other thermal engineering applications. The main challenge in all fields is to increase the efficiency of compact heat exchangers. ANSYS Fluent solved for the velocity field in three directions, increasing heat transfer with moderate pressure loss compared to previous techniques.

Wireless charging of electric vehicles is convenient, but adverse health effects caused by the electromagnetic field exceeding human electromagnetic exposure limits must be addressed. Joint simulation of an electric vehicle and human model using ANSYS Maxwell and ANSYS HFSS revealed that the highest electric field inside human tissues is well below proposed regulation limits.

ANSYS Fluent simulations enabled meaningful, accurate comparison of changes in lift, drag, temperature and airflow in various experimental designs.
