The construction team from Moscow State Technical University (MSTU), in cooperation with CADFEM CIS, developed a unique car wind turbine using ANSYS CFD and ANSYS Mechanical within the parametric ANSYS Workbench environment.

Problem:

MSTU investigated design of a future "clean car," using fluid-structure interaction simulation to reduce emission output.

Solution:

CT engineers studied the transient 3-D flow dynamics of the vehicle; they optimized the shape of the roof by minimizing aerodynamic drag and acoustic noise. The team simulated aero-acoustic designs using the SAS-SST turbulence model, since it is able to resolve the broad range of turbulent scales.

Engineers accelerated the shape optimization process by using mesh morphing simulation software available within ANSYS Fluent.
