Designing Better Circuit Breakers Using ANSYS Fluent — ANSYS Maxwell Multiphysics Simulation

A circuit breaker must dissipate a large amount of energy in a short time to protect an electrical circuit from damage. Evaluating and testing circuit breaker designs to ensure performance is, however, extremely cost- and time-intensive. Traditional, destructive testing often fails to explain the cause of the failure. In these cases, simulation can help designers to study circuit breakers and evaluate design changes in significantly greater detail than physical testing allows.

In this on-demand webinar, we’ll present a multiphysics simulation-based approach for evaluating electric arc movement inside the circuit breaker. This approach combines ANSYS Fluent and ANSYS Maxwell and has been validated for industrial megawatt circuit breakers. It helps designers understand the causes of circuit breaker design failures. With better insights, designers can narrow down their design choices for physical testing and validation.

Configurable safety relays help prevent injuries and damage in factory automation systems by cutting off electrical power in response to data received from sensors. When a safety relay fails, the production line must be halted until the relay can be repaired or replaced, resulting in expensive downtime. Phoenix Contact Electronics engineers use ANSYS software to develop a digital twin of its safety relays that will integrate real-time sensor data with simulation results to predict failures in advance. The relay can then be replaced or repaired while the line is not operating.
