Pointing RFIDs in the Right Direction - Article - ANSYS Advantage - V12 I2

Radio frequency identification (RFID) tags provide a superior level of inventory management, asset tracking and supply chain management over barcode technology, which requires barcodes to be within sight of the reader. RFID technology can be more broadly applied and becomes increasingly accurate by boosting the range at which tags can be read. Engineers at Honeywell leveraged ANSYS HFSS electromagnetic field simulation software to improve upon current RFID systems. Using HFSS, they were able to virtually evaluate new concepts in less time, significantly reducing product development lead time.

5G Antenna Technology for Smart Products - Article - ANSYS Advantage - V12 I2

The dramatic rise of smart, connected products requires a rapidly increasing communications bandwidth, but the radio frequency spectrum available is growing at a much slower pace than what is needed. One way the fifth generation of cellular wireless technology, 5G, can address this problem is by leveraging beamforming antennas to send different signals to different areas of the cellular network, enabling multiple simultaneous transmissions at the same time on the same frequency. Pivotal Commware is designing the next generation of these beamforming antennas or cellular base stations and other applications, at a fraction of the cost of existing methods. The company’s engineers use ANSYS HFSS to create antenna designs that meet design requirements on the first or second pass, substantially reducing the time required to bring new antennas to market in this highly competitive industry.

Antenna Optimization using Far-Field Tuning

Analytic derivatives in ANSYS HFSS enable a design engineer to tune geometric features and visualize how these changes impact the device’s response. In ANSYS HFSS, the far-field radiation patterns can be tuned in addition to S-parameters. This feedback provides the design engineer with a more intuitive understanding of how each of the geometric “handles” impact the device performance, allowing for quick design optimization by targeted exploration of the design space.

HFSS 3D Components

HFSS models are growing in complexity and fidelity as compute resources become more readily available. For example, HFSS is being used to model installed antenna performance including things like feeding networks and reflector systems, rather than simply modeling the antenna in free space. Managing these multi-part models can become very complex if not impossible, especially when the engineer who is modeling the full system isn’t the one necessarily designing each individual part. 3D Components facilitate the design process by providing an infrastructure to efficiently manage complex models and freely share parts among collaborators, customers and/or vendors.

HFSS PO Region

This paper shows applications for a new R17 feature, PO Hybrid Regions. PO Region is a fast alternative to IE Region for simulation of the smooth conducting or dielectric structures that are electrically very large. Three applications are discussed: horn fed reflector, reflector with radome, and Cassegrain reflector. Each application leverages expanded hybrid solver enabled in new release for accurate and efficient simulation.

ANSYS® Fluent® Helps Reduce Vehicle Wind Noise

The DDES turbulence model was used to simulate side-window wall-pressure fluctuation noise for the Alfa Romeo Giulietta, and a very accurate transient simulation was performed using ANSYS Fluent CFD software running on a Cray XC40 supercomputer.
