For a long time, engineers have been doing safety analysis to address the functional safety requirements of ISO 26262 with point tools in place to carry out HARA, FHA, FMEA, FMEDA and FTA. The most popular tool is MS Excel, but there are also specific tools like Fault Tree+, PTC Windchill, RAMS Com and IQ FMEA.
Common errors using point tools are due to the lack of traceability, the inability to handle multiple design iterations, the safety analysis not being based on the actual design of the system and the analysis not being model based. Along with these errors, the use of point tools alone is incredibly inefficient, time-consuming and expensive.
