Many industrial applications require modeling of particles along with fluid flow. Applications like fluidized bed gasification, sedimentation, filtration, spray atomization, etc. require thorough analysis of particle tracking and particle-fluid interactions. Based on the particle loading and volume fraction, particles can interact with the continuous phase differently. So depending on the situation, the particle tracking methodology needs to be modified. This presentation will discuss techniques related to particle tracking in FLUENT. Discussion will also involve techniques to account for inter particle interactions like stochastic collision and Discrete Element Method (DEM).

Surya Deb graduated from Virginia Tech in Dec 2013 after completing his Doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering. During his PhD, he focused on fluid flows involving particulate/particle interactions. One of the major part of his dissertation involved the development of numerical methods to resolve and capture the fluid-particle interactions inside fluidized bed gasifiers. Prior to this, Surya did his Masters in Mechanical Engineering from University of Connecticut (UCONN), where he worked on numerical schemes involving capillary driven flows and industrial sintering.
Surya joined ANSYS as a Technical Services Engineer for the Fluids Tech Functions team in January 2016. Prior to that, he worked as an ORISE Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) in Morgantown, West Virginia.Surya’s areas of expertise and interests include Multiphase flows, Fluid-particle interactions and Heat Transfer.
