A New Paradigm in Turbulence Modeling for Aerodynamic Simulation - Webinar

Whether for cars, trucks, aircraft, or wind turbines, aerodynamics is a critical aspect of improving energy efficiency. Aerodynamics is a complex science — calculations need to be performed with a high degree of precision and accuracy, since every 1 percent of change in aerodynamic drag or lift has enormous implications on machine performance. Aerodynamic simulation, therefore, requires accurate flow solvers, comprehensive turbulence models, and precise geometry handling.

In this 60-minute Webinar, Dr. Florian Menter, a world-renowned turbulence modeling expert, will present Stress-Blended Eddy Simulation (SBES) — a new paradigm in hybrid RANS-LES modeling — with a focus on aerodynamics and other applications. Large Eddy Simulation (LES) is impractically expensive in the near-wall region. However, Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) models are well-suited for wall boundary layers. Therefore, hybrid models such as SBES that use RANS for the wall boundary layers and LES away from the walls provide the best accuracy for practical turbulent flow simulations. The SBES blending function clearly shows the zones of RANS and LES usage. The SBES methods presented in this Webinar are now commercially available for aerodynamics and other complex flows.

Fluid-Structure Interaction for Healthcare: Simulation of the Heart with ANSYS CFD to Better Understand Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy - Webinar

The symptoms of HOCM in the left ventricle of the human heart include thickening of the ventricle walls leading to reduced blood pumping capacity, a bulge below the aorta, and flow obstruction. HOCM can lead to sudden death even in young, apparently healthy people.

Researchers at Intevac and Ozen Engineering simulated the fluid—structure interactions (FSI) of the human left ventricle with HOCM to better understand the condition in the hope of saving lives. In this webinar, you will learn how they used ANSYS CFX and ANSYS Fluent solutions in two-way FSI simulations to model the flow valve interactions (aortic and mitral valves) during the systolic phase (contraction to pump blood out of the heart) and diastolic phase (relaxation of the heart to refill with blood). You will discover the five mechanisms that can cause a leaflet of the mitral valve to deform and obstruct blood flow in HOCM. This knowledge could eventually help cardiac physicians and surgeons develop methods to prevent sudden death caused by this condition.
